Over the last several months, we’ve made progress in getting our refinery running safely again. In January, we heard from the Federal Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board which reported their initial findings as to the cause of the Feb. 18th, 2015 explosion.

Because of the continuing concerns regarding the refinery’s use and safety of Modified Hydrofluoric Acid, Torrance is working with the South Coast Air Quality Management District on a study of safer alternatives to this chemical.

However, just yesterday, I learned of some troubling news. The Board of the Air Quality Management District is planning to vote tomorrow on whether or not to fire their long standing CEO. This is a move seen by many as an attempt to replace him with a CEO that will be more lax on regulating pollution.

This concerns me because a disruption like this could impact the progress we’ve made with the refinery here in Torrance. Because I value clean air, I’ve written a letter to the AQMD opposing this move. If this news concerns you as well, I’d encourage you to register a public comment by sending an email to the Clerk of the Board at [email protected]
